We have four heritage hotels within walking distance from our home. The Rose and Crown, The Woodbridge, the Guildford Hotel and the Stirling Arms, which we visited recently. Hearing that the hotel had changed hands and there were new plans in store for the building and menu, we thought we would take a before and after visit.
The menu covers the basic food grub and on our visit we ordered a beef and Guinness pie and fish and chips. The pie was full of unctuous meat – mushrooms, onions, carrots and tomatoes in a rich gravy. The most fish came in a crisp batter, crunchy on the outside, floury on the inside – just how the FWO likes his chips – and the accompanying salad was fresh with a salad dressing on the side.
The new owners are doing up the front of the hotel, I have high hopes the bottle shop will be moved to the back of the hotel, but am thinking that might be a bit to difficult to achieve. We will be watching this space with interest!
