We were invited to a preview of Tully at the lovely Luna theatre in Leederville – written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman. Charlize Theron is Marlo, the mother of two children, and is about to have her third when her wealthy brother tells her he had bought her a gift – a night nanny – to help her through the early days after the birth. Although she is reluctant to take up the offer, she is overwhelmed in the days following the arrival of her new baby – her young son is a particular challenge, described as quirky but is something much more than that – and her husband offers little in the way of emotional or physical support and so she relents and calls the number her brother provided.
One night Tully arrives and Marlo’s world changes – the movie follows the relationship that develops between the two – a gently comedic story that has a surprising twist. Both Theron – who gained 22 kilos to play Marlo – and McKenzie Davis as Tully give stellar performances, ably backed by Ron Livingston as her affable but oblivious husband, Mark Duplass as her rich brother and Elaine Tan as his slightly vacuous wife.
Tully screens from 10 May however – StudiocCanal Australia and Luna Palace Cinemas invites you to discover TULLY with a special advance screening on Sunday 6 May at Luna Cinemas Leederville for a 5pm film start.
