The FWO and I turned up at 2.50pm last Thursday, and waited in line (not something we like doing), but we were quickly welcomed into the renovated Guildford Hotel, found a table, seats, drinks, food in that order. Fabulous. The FWO and I thought that we could make a match of the grand old man – Ben Chifley, and the grand old dame – The Guildford Hotel. We raised and drank a glass or two of Partisan by Jove from Mclaren Vale – wine and book review by @perthcafeculture – deep purple colour, it has a lilting bouquet of blackberries, plums and a lingering note of cloves. The smooth silky palate shows flavours of plums and liquorice with a spicy backdrop.
‘Remembering Ben Chifley’ by Sue Martin – An affectionate rendering of memories and stories from those who knew and loved him, put together by his niece, drawing on much previously unpublished material, this is a rare insight into the life of one of Australia’s most beloved Prime Ministers. From his early childhood, through the years of the Great Depression and beyond – this is a warm and endearing book.
